In marketing terms, you\u2019ll need to identify your ideal customer. An ideal customer is a person with certain traits and behavior who resonates with your brand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s assume you\u2019re running a blog that talks about organic cosmetics and let\u2019s assume you\u2019re not selling anything. You still need to define that ideal person and identify his\/her traits and behavior. For example, you could try to answer the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does she care about climate change?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is she a vegetarian?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the income level?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The moment you know this you\u2019ll know how to write, what to write about, and how to connect to these people via various marketing channels, newsletters in this case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several methods that can help you figure out who your desired audience is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brainstorming\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a strategy that suits brand new companies very well. What you\u2019ll have to do is make a list of traits and behaviors for your ideal customers. You can include age, gender, location, income, hobbies, how they consume social media, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, if you say that these are assumptions, you\u2019d be totally right. It\u2019s way more personal than posting on social media and hoping that your message reaches your desired audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Email allows you high degrees of message personalization if segmentation is done properly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The moment someone gives you an email address they have more intent towards your brand than those that don\u2019t give you their email address.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You own that email list. You can use that email list to build new audiences in social media. For example, in Facebook, you can create lookalike audiences based on your matched email addresses. What does that mean? You can upload those email addresses to Facebook. If some of those are actual emails that people use to log in to Facebook, Facebook will try to discover users that have similar behavior (lookalike) to the users with the addresses you provided.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/08\/22\/millennials-spend-more-time-on-their-email-than-any-other-generation.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Adobe Email Consumer survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 1000 white-collar employees revealed that workers between ages 25 and 34 spend 6.4 hours a day checking their email, with more than a third checking their work mail before they even get out of bed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s next? It\u2019s time to build your email list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to grow an email list<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is when we get a bit more technical about our topic. Here are the three things you need to build an email list:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A website or blog.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opt-in forms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An email marketing service.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re assuming you already have a site or blog, so I\u2019ll skip them. Still, I&#8217;m going to talk a bit about landing pages. In online marketing, a landing page is a standalone web page, created with an advertising purpose. It\u2019s where a visitor \u201clands\u201d after clicking on an ad, an email, a call to action button, etc. This landing page has a single goal: from getting users to download an ebook, to create an account, to sign up, or to buy something.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These landing pages are often used to generate leads.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what is a lead?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lead is an individual or organization that manifests an interest in your brand. The interest is expressed by sharing contact information (eg: email address), a phone number, or even a social media handle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leads can become your customers, or not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why am I telling you this? Because besides your blog, you can also use landing pages to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jotform.com\/email-collector\/\">collect email addresses<\/a>, meaning leads for your brand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, how do you technically collect these email addresses?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Via <\/span><b>opt-in forms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s talk a bit more about them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opt-in forms: it&#8217;s nice meeting you!<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re probably recognizing this:<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8240\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image7.jpg\" alt=\"Basic form\" width=\"1000\" height=\"513\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The field where someone inputs an email address and then the button that gets clicked for submission is actually the most basic form out there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, forms are not built-in WordPress features. You will need a WordPress plugin to create forms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The moment you create your form, you will need to push your leads to segmented email lists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, in the Colibri case, here you have some list examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Colibri buyers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The visitors that leave their email address on the landing page that promotes our ebook on how to create a website using WordPress get added to this list.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8243\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image10.png\" alt=\"Ebook downloaders email list\" width=\"1000\" height=\"522\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Newsletter subscribers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here we push all the users that subscribe to our newsletter. The form is included in a banner placed inside blog articles.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8235 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image2.png\" alt=\"Newssletter subscribers email list\" width=\"987\" height=\"550\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to properly segment your leads, you can add some new fields in the form. In the example of marketing consultant, Neil Patel, he asks for information about company revenue and marketing budget. So, if a user belongs to a certain bucket, he will receive tailored email marketing messages according to its needs. Smaller companies, with smaller budgets, have different goals from bigger ones.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8250\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image17.png\" alt=\"Form with segmentation\" width=\"800\" height=\"343\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, you can also include opt-in forms in banners in the sidebar, or <\/span><b>inside website pop-ups<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the moment you want to exit Neil Patel\u2019s website, he has a pop-up that takes over the whole screen asking \u201cWant More SEO Traffic?\u201d. He now has a multistep form, where he tries to segment his leads.\u00a0 In exchange for answering 9 questions, the leads can get a 7-week action plan for getting more traffic. Some of the most popular WordPress form plugins out there are Contact Form 7, Gravity Forms, Ninja Forms, and Forminator, which we mentioned in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/how-to-add-a-contact-form-in-wordpress\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a previous article of ours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They can help you design beautiful forms, segment your users, send an initial mail, and that\u2019s kinda it. If you want to send out newsletters and email campaigns based on some conditions, you will need to create an account with marketing providers such as Mailchimp, Sendinblue, or others.\u00a0 The form plugins mentioned above already have built-in integrations with the most popular email marketing tools out there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, some of the most popular email tools have built their own WordPress plugins. <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8234\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image1.png\" alt=\"WordPress form plugins\" width=\"800\" height=\"438\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sendinblue.com\/plugins\/wordpress\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Source<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, at Colibri, we\u2019re using Sendinblue as our marketing service providers, together with their very own WordPress plugin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the following chapter, I\u2019m going to show you how we manage our own WordPress blog subscription. It\u2019s going to be really hands-on. The process can be replicated with most of the tools out there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s hit the road, shall we?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to run a blog subscription in WordPress<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First thing first: create a Sendinblue account and complete the whole setup. Make sure to go through the default settings. Inside the sender and domains, you will set up your domain and email address from which the mails will get sent out.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8247\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image14.png\" alt=\"Set up your email tool\" width=\"1000\" height=\"440\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head over to lists, and click on \u201cAdd a new list\u201d.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8242\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image9-1.png\" alt=\"Create a new contact list\" width=\"1000\" height=\"345\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Name your list. Make sure to use a relevant name. You could go with \u201cBlog subscribers\u201d if you\u2019d like. Now hit \u201cCreate empty list\u201d. <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8244\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image11.png\" alt=\"Name your list\" width=\"445\" height=\"260\" \/><\/span>Your lists will automatically have columns. The columns will contain the information you are collecting about your leads. This information is called contact attributes: eg name, email, country, etc. Whenever you add a new field to a form, it will collect such an attribute, that will be sent to Sendinblue, or to your email provider. The logic stays the same.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Install the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/mailin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sendinblue WordPress plugin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You will be asked to \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.sendinblue.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/209467485-What-s-an-API-key-and-how-can-I-get-mine-\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activate your account with your API key v3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. Head over to Forms -&gt; Add new form. <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8249\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image16.png\" alt=\"Add new form in the WordPress plugin\" width=\"1000\" height=\"522\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will end up inside an HTML form builder. Styling can be managed via CSS coding. The preview box then lets you see any edits in real-time. <\/span>Now, there are tools out there that can help you avoid HTML design. We chose this one because we wanted to be able to customize everything.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">When the form is saved, a shortcode gets generated. A shortcode is a tiny code snippet that you can copy and paste anywhere you want. On the live page or post, it will load your actual form. Shortcodes are a common practice in WordPress. For example, we\u2019re also using a plugin for tables. Inside the plugins, we\u2019re preparing the design of the table. When the table is ready we do not have to copy all of it in a blog post. We\u2019re just going to place there its shortcode. It\u2019s a more elegant method. If you need to make changes to the form, you\u2019ll go back to the plugin. The shortcode will stay the same, so you won\u2019t need to alter it.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Push your contacts to a list.
