{"id":7732,"date":"2021-06-08T12:50:23","date_gmt":"2021-06-08T12:50:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/?p=7732"},"modified":"2022-06-23T12:20:56","modified_gmt":"2022-06-23T12:20:56","slug":"wordpress-google-analytics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wordpress-google-analytics\/","title":{"rendered":"The Ins and Outs of WordPress and Google Analytics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Analytics is a free tracking tool that gives you detailed reports of how users behave on your website: where are they from, from what devices they browse, how they scroll or interact with different elements of your site (videos, carousels, buttons, etc.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of all, by using Google Analytics you\u2019ll understand which marketing channels are bringing you the most value, or which ones are leaking you money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Google Analytics reports are a goldmine if you know how to draw insights from them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it\u2019s totally FREE!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, let&#8217;s start with creating your Google Analytics account, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/marketingplatform.google.com\/about\/analytics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to set up your Google Analytics account<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, when you\u2019re reading stuff on Google Analytics, you\u2019ll find out about its two versions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal Analytics (UA)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Analytics 4 (GA4) &#8211; the recent default Google Analytics.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal Analytics is very much web-focused, while Google Analytics 4 can provide cross-platform data (mobile + web). This is the main difference, but not the only one. I\u2019m not going into detail right now, because this is not the purpose of this article.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some experts out there consider that you should install both of them on your site because GA4 is not mature enough to be used as a standalone web tracking platform.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, I\u2019ll just go through setting up Google Universal Analytics very fast (the GA4 setup is similar).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, after creating your Google Analytics account, log in and:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Set up a Google Analytics property<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A property represents your website or app and is the collection point in Analytics for the data from your site or app.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the Admin level, select your desired account (if you have more than one);<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7751\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image19.png\" alt=\"Select Analytics account\" width=\"292\" height=\"338\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head over to the \u201cProperty column, and select \u201cCreate Property\u201d;<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7733\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image1-3.png\" alt=\"Create Analytics property\" width=\"743\" height=\"58\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Name your new property, eg: the website\u2019s name.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select the currency and time zone. Future changes of the time zone don\u2019t work retroactively;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the \u201cAdvanced Settings\u201d toggle on \u201cCreate a Universal Analytics property\u201d;<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7756\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image24.png\" alt=\"Create Universal Analytics property\" width=\"810\" height=\"453\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type in your website URL;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tick the option that creates both GA4 and UA properties. They will have different ids. If you named your property &#8220;My Website&#8221;, your Universal Analytics property will be named &#8220;My Website (UA-1234567)&#8221; and your Google Analytics 4 property will be named &#8220;My Website &#8211; GA4 (98765432)&#8221;;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select \u201cNext\u201d;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide the required information about your business;<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7757\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image25.png\" alt=\"Info about the business\" width=\"599\" height=\"503\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, you\u2019re done!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Set up a reporting view in your Google Analytics property<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Views allow you to filter your data, maybe you want to have a different view for your site and blog, or you want to filter out employees\u2019 IPs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The admin view has three columns: account, property, and view. In the view column select \u201cCreate view\u201d;<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7735\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image3-2.png\" alt=\"Create Analytics view\" width=\"278\" height=\"73\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select either Website or Mobile App;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Name your view and select the time zone;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Save your view by clicking on \u201cCreate view\u201d;<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7734\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image2-2.png\" alt=\"Create view\" width=\"863\" height=\"593\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now you\u2019re back to the admin area and it\u2019s time to select your view for making additional settings.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7736\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image4-2.png\" alt=\"Additional view settings\" width=\"247\" height=\"313\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Name your view;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type in the website URL;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select the time zone country or territory: this will affect the hour and day for which you\u2019ll see the reporting;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure to exclude bot traffic.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7737\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image5-3.png\" alt=\"Exclude bot traffic\" width=\"677\" height=\"638\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set up \u201cSite Search\u201d. If you enable site search you will be able to track what people are looking for on your site.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Save your view.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you\u2019ve set up Google Analytics, it still does not track your site, they are not yet connected. We will need to place a tracking code on your site that will allow Google Analytics to collect data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Add the tracking code to your WordPress website<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now there are two main ways for doing this: via a developer or Google Tag Manager.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In Google Analytics, t<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he tracking code is found at the property level, Tracking info -&gt; Tracking Code.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7741\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image9-2.png\" alt=\"Tracking code\" width=\"448\" height=\"465\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7747 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image15-1.png\" alt=\"Global site tag\" width=\"1141\" height=\"545\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned above, in the instructions, you can send this code to a developer to place the code (script), as the first item into the &lt;HEAD&gt; of every webpage you want to track. He\u2019ll know how this gets done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, I like to do this via the Google Tag Manager. Let\u2019s find out how.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to deploy Google Analytics on your WordPress website using Google Tag Manager<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free tag management system (TMS) developed by Google. It allows you to manage and update different types of tags on your website. A tag is a Javascript tracking code or snippet that allows you to track user behavior on your website and send this information to a third party.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s say you want to run some Facebook ads. You will need to use the Facebook tag on your site in order to let Facebook when conversions are happening due to your campaign.\u00a0 The same goes for Google Ads, Twitter Ads, Quora Ads, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But tagging doesn\u2019t only happen for ads. You can even add the Google Analytics tag, or maybe the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mouseflow.com\">Mouseflow<\/a> tag (which allows you to understand how users click and scroll on your site).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, these tags can be deployed manually, by your developers, inside your website\u2019s code. But that wouldn\u2019t be too wise. If they are too many, you might lose track of them, or install them twice..and it\u2019s not quite a scalable process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why Google Tag Manager comes to the rescue. It allows you to deploy different types of tracking codes (tags) without needing to edit your website\u2019s code.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another cool thing is that it\u2019s very easy to make changes to these tags, and you can even have a history of your changes. And if you run multiple websites, you can have an account for each of them. Your life just got easier. Some tags are so easy to deploy that anyone can do this, but usually, the folks inside your marketing team would be in charge. For more advanced tags, such as events or conversions, they might still need a developer around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, let\u2019s start from ground 0: sign up for Google Tag Manager.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019re logged in, click the \u201cCreate Account\u201d button.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7750 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image18.png\" alt=\"Create new Google Tag Manager account\" width=\"1044\" height=\"433\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now it\u2019s time to name your account and select the country. You can use your website\u2019s name.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Container Setup step, type in your website\u2019s name, then choose your platform: app or website (depending on what you need to track).<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7746\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image14-1.png\" alt=\"GTM container setup\" width=\"694\" height=\"568\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hit \u201cCreate\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After agreeing to the Terms and Conditions you\u2019ll be prompted with two&#8230;tags, as you might have guessed, which needs to be deployed on your site, onto the header.php and body of your WordPress site to be more precise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7752 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image20.png\" alt=\"Install Google Tag Manager\" width=\"793\" height=\"593\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just head over to a developer to help you out with this<\/span><\/p>\n<p>OR<\/p>\n<p>deploy it via the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/duracelltomi-google-tag-manager\/\">Google Tag Manager for WordPress plugin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When this is done, you can create your first tag inside the Google Tag Manager!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>How are you hanging on? Blink twice if you&#8217;re still with me :).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, let\u2019s create our Google Analytics tag!<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head over to \u201cAdd a new tag\u201d.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7744\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image12-2.png\" alt=\"Add new tag in GTM\" width=\"673\" height=\"293\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give your tag a name, eg: Universal Google Analytics.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7759\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image27.png\" alt=\"Name your tag\" width=\"1000\" height=\"539\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click on \u201cTag Configuration\u201d, then choose the \u201cGoogle Analytics: Universal Analytics&#8221; tag. It\u2019s nice that there are lots of predefined tags in GTM.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7753\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image21.png\" alt=\"Choose the tag type\" width=\"550\" height=\"609\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this setup, click on the dropdown menu under Google Analytics Settings and select \u201cNew Variable\u201d.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7743\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image11-2.png\" alt=\"Setting up a variable in GTM\" width=\"600\" height=\"513\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Name your variable, then paste here the Google Analytics ID. <\/span>The ID is the one you find at the property level of your Analytics account -&gt; Tracking Info -&gt; then tracking code, as shown below.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7758\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image26.png\" alt=\"Tracking ID\" width=\"1000\" height=\"385\" \/><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going back to the tag setup, from the Triggering level, select \u201cAll Pages\u201d. This means that this tag will be triggered whenever a page is seen. <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7739\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image7-3.png\" alt=\"Setting up a trigger in GTM\" width=\"1121\" height=\"182\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Save your tag from the \u201cSave\u201d button in the upper right corner.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Submit your change to GTM.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And you\u2019re done! Google Analytics is deployed on your site. From this moment on you\u2019ll be seeing traffic data in your account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, if you want to learn more about how to use Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager, here is my favorite resource: the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UClgihdkPzNDtuoQy4xDw5mA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Measure School Youtube channel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This process can be repeated for other tags as well. But things can get a bit more complicated than this when you want to track specific purchases on a site, or video plays, or button clicks, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to deploy Google Analytics on your WordPress website using plugins<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, by now you\u2019ve found out how to deploy the Google Analytics tracking code on your site using:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manual installation via a developer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Tag Manager<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there\u2019s a third way!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enter WordPress plugins&#8230;or, enter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.monsterinsights.com\/how-to-implement-google-analytics-with-google-tag-manager\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monster Insights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One piece of advice though&#8230;choose one method, if you try to deploy Google Analytics multiple times, you will get skewed results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With over 3.000.000 users, Monster Insights is the best Google Analytics Plugin for WordPress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the plugin is activated, you\u2019ll be guided to the setup. It\u2019s pretty straightforward.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select \u201cLaunch the wizard\u201d.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7749\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image17.png\" alt=\"Setup wizard for MonsterInsights\" width=\"694\" height=\"816\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose the category that best describes your website.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7740\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image8-2.png\" alt=\"site category\" width=\"968\" height=\"839\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connect Monster Insights and Google Analytics, and give the plugin the needed permissions to access the account.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7745\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image13-2.png\" alt=\"Connect Analytics with monsterInsights\" width=\"928\" height=\"607\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose your desired Analytics property that you want to connect.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the connection is done, you\u2019ll be taken to the final steps of the setup process. You\u2019ll be prompted for the recommended settings for the Google Analytics plugin.
