Lots of blogs, lots of good content wherever you turn your head and wondering where you could fit in?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blogging can still be a very good way to get your stories heard if done properly.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is starting a blog is easy peasy. The growth part needs lots of research, commitment, and a bit of marketing budget.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, no worries, this guide is meant to lend you a helping hand and give you a framework for starting and growing a blog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll be seeing six main chapters:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7382 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/blogging-strategies-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"blogging strategies\" width=\"960\" height=\"3843\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The content is pretty straightforward, full of checklists. I don\u2019t want to write the longest guide on blogging. I just want you to better visualize how you can get from A to B. Definitely the topics can be developed further, but right now you do not need to go into every detail. It will get too overwhelming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, let\u2019s hit the road!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chapter 1: Crafting a Blog Identity<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The purpose of this chapter is to come up with answers to the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to write about?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who to write for?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the size of your niche?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who is your competition?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which are your blogging goals?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to name your blog?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ready? Let\u2019s go!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to write about?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My first suggestion would be: write about a topic you are really familiar with. This way you\u2019ll be able to deliver lots of good quality content, that will bring added value to the reader. Else, you\u2019ll probably end up writing content that\u2019s already out there, because you\u2019ll use it as your own writing source.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will definitely be easier to write about something that you know, and even better, that you love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, let\u2019s say you are just good with writing and passionate about a topic, but not quite skillful in other areas. There are ways to make some noise in this blogging world as long as you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write with passion about what makes you tick<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your topic and subtopic generate enough monthly searches\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Properly identify your blogging goals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Properly identify those people that care about the topic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manage to bring some added value to the content that is already there<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have a focused marketing plan<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, let\u2019s say you are an expert on \u201calpaca haircuts\u201d. Is this something people would be interested in? Is there room to grow to some other subtopics? We\u2019ll be covering this topic a bit later on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, if you\u2019re curious about \u201calpaca haircuts\u201d, it seems that there are at least 250 global monthly searches out there. Are you writing for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working moms in the UK passionate about healthy food?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dog lovers in Japan?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Succulents growers in Scandinavia?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US business people in search of ways to avoid burnout?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In marketing terms, this is called your target audience, but I\u2019ll refer to it as your \u201ctribe\u201d because I feel it expresses more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will have to understand:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The demographics of your tribe: age and gender<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The localization and language of your tribe<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are their problems, fears, emotions around the topic you chose<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where can you find the people in your tribe?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What kind of sites do they like?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What kind of social media do they consume?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are they part of some Facebook groups?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answers to these questions will help you define how you communicate with them, where you communicate (besides the blog), and even how to design your blog (eg: pink and girly fonts for very feminine topics).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the size of your niche?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A blog\u2019s main traffic is organic traffic. So, remember my alpaca example above?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to be very careful with your selection of topics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some free tool recommendations that can help you understand the trends, and search volumes for certain searches.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/trends.google.com\/trends\/?geo=US\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Trends\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It helps you understand if a certain topic is trending or not, see its evolution over the year, and its geographical spread.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6872\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/google-trends.jpg\" alt=\"google trends\" width=\"959\" height=\"796\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/neilpatel.com\/ubersuggest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubersuggest<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It helps you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See the volumes of certain searches in Google in various languages<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assess the difficulty of ranking for such a keyword (on a scale from 1 to 100)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discover new keywords<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See who you compete against on that particular search term\/query<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discover similar websites to a certain website\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understand how many backlinks are needed to rank higher<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which content gets more social media engagement<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6875\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ubersuggest.jpg\" alt=\"ubersuggest\" width=\"737\" height=\"173\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordtracker.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WordTracker<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s pretty similar to Ubersuggest, except that it does not offer backlinks and competition data. It\u2019s merely a keywords discovery tool, that can give you volume insights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s extra is the possibility to do Youtube and Amazon searches as well!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6877\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/wordtracker.jpg\" alt=\"wordtracker\" width=\"850\" height=\"398\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/explodingtopics.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exploding topics<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It shows you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which topics have grown lately<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topics in the same category that are growing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monthly search volume<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They boast they\u00a0 \u201csurface rapidly growing topics before they take off\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I subscribed to their newsletter, and I receive quite interesting trending topics in my inbox.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6868\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/exploding-topics.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"915\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/answerthepublic.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Answer the public\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tool offers you why\/what\/when\/who\/how questions around a specific topic. It\u2019s a total goldmine!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6867\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/answer-the-public.jpg\" alt=\"answer the public\" width=\"706\" height=\"731\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google suggest<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, let\u2019s say you made a list of keywords. You can refine this list even more if you type the search terms in Google search and see what other related terms are suggested by Google itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a tool that can be used mostly for research, but you\u2019ll need to check the volumes as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6871\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Google-suggest.jpg\" alt=\"Google suggest\" width=\"767\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you aim big, the best content tool out there is Ahrefs, which is a paid tool.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I used it in my Alpaca example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6862\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/alpaca-haircuts.jpg\" alt=\"Keyword volumes in Ahrefs\" width=\"850\" height=\"522\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It shows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volume data on keywords searches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Competition data in terms of pages with traffic, keywords they rank for, backlinks, ads, and landing pages<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a complete tool if you know how to use the data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, when you make your list of keywords, make sure to target keywords that have more than 500 searches a month in your desired location and traffic higher than 100 (! not every search results in traffic, I\u2019ll explain this later on.). Now, your purpose is to rank on the first page. Why?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6878\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/page-2-of-Google-search-results.jpg\" alt=\"page 2 of Google search results\" width=\"742\" height=\"129\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who is your competition?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to understand who you compete against. You\u2019ll need to do some spy work, and Ubersuggest and Ahrefs can help you with that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some steps for the spy work:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make a list of 20-30 keywords you want to rank for with monthly searches &gt;500 in your niche that are not very competitive (see Keyword Difficulty in Ahrefs or\u00a0 SEO Difficulty in Ubersuggest to be less than 30)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check these keywords in Google search and see what blogs show up on the first page of organic results.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analyze the quality of the content, the structure, the media used.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check the social media profiles for the competition, how many followers are there, which are the main hashtags used.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Investigate if there are Facebook groups on the topic and join them. Follow the conversations to understand the needs of the people in the group.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are the bloggers promoting products and services of various brands?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such research can help you understand how the best players in your niche write and engage with followers on social media. From now on you need to figure out how you can write better, and come up with answers to questions left unanswered or with unsatisfactory answers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t be discouraged if you discover lots of competitors. If you can create better and original content, you can definitely make your way in.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that the key to success is a unique perspective on the topic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which are your blogging goals?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, let\u2019s say you found your niche and your tribe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, what\u2019s your \u201cwhy\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do you want to blog?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it to educate?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it because you just want to make your voice heard?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it because you just want to explore your hobby or talent?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it to earn money?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the moment you know the answer to this question, you\u2019ll need to make sure the whole content strategy will help you prove your \u201cwhy\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your answer to the question is to earn money, we have some monetization advice in chapter 6.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, how can you figure out if you can monetize a certain topic?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can be revealed by your competition research. You\u2019ll need to pay attention to the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are the bloggers mentioning that they are affiliates of certain brands?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are some of the links in the articles affiliate links?<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6860\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/affiliate-link.jpg\" alt=\"affiliate link\" width=\"872\" height=\"132\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do the blogs have banners promoting certain products?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do businesses often advertise with bloggers in your market?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are there Youtube videos in your niche market as having \u201csponsored content\u201d?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are there Instagram profiles in your niche that promote certain products and services?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the answer is \u201cyes\u201d to some of the questions, then you might consider yourself lucky.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to name your blog?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll keep this one short.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your blog\u2019s name is more than just a URL. It needs to be memorable and catchy. It can be something with no meaning at all or something that resonates with your niche and audience.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some tips for finding your brand name:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brainstorm 20 names. You can use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandroot.com\/names\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brandroot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for inspiration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for the names in Google search. Maybe that word has a different meaning than you would expect, or you might discover some artist carrying that name. See what images show up. Try to translate the word with Google Translate.
