What kind of literature? Is it \u201cadventure\u201d, \u201cthriller\u201d, \u201cthe classics\u201d, \u201cscience fiction\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s go with \u201cadventure\u201d. Ok, we narrowed it down a bit. Next, there are more choices: fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, etc. It seems we\u2019re getting somewhere\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using classifications helps a lot, they bring order to chaos, don\u2019t you think? What would have happened if there were no specific book sections in the bookstore? Probably a really bad user experience, and a bookseller in a state of burnout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is how blogs should also be organized so that the reader doesn\u2019t get lost scrolling for a particular topic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main section (eg: \u201cHistory\u201d, \u201cBiology\u201d) are called categories. They can have sub-categories (\u201cthriller\u201d, \u201cscience fiction\u201d), or tags (\u201cfantasy\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll go into the details below, so follow me!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WordPress categories vs WordPress tags<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kubiobuilder.com\/blog\/tags-versus-categories-wordpress\/\">Categories<\/a> are meant to classify in a broader way a series of blog posts. Categories can have their own sub-categories. Maybe this is the hardest thing to do, prioritizing what should go as a category, as a sub-category, or as a tag.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The technical aspect of it is easy peasy.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can define categories in 2 ways:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Create a WordPress category at the blog post level<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go to Posts-&gt;Add New. Select \u201cAdd new category\u201d from the panel on the right.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6348\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Add-WordPress-category-to-blog-post.jpg\" alt=\"Add WordPress category to blog post\" width=\"850\" height=\"369\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to create a sub-category, you\u2019ll have to assign a \u201cparent category\u201d, and choose an already existing category.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can create more categories, and assign only the one relevant for the current blog article.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right beneath the categories, you\u2019ll see the option for tag creation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s it! Mission accomplished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Create a WordPress category in the WordPress dashboard<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head over to Posts-&gt;Categories.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6352\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Create-WordPress-categories-in-the-dashboard.jpg\" alt=\"Create WordPress categories in the dashboard\" width=\"850\" height=\"276\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you will define a category, you\u2019ll provide the following information:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Name<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the name of the category. It will show up on your site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Slug<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the URL-friendly version of the category. This is generated automatically based on the name of the category, but you can change it if you want.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s say your category is \u201chealthy eating\u201d, your slug can be healthy-eating. You do not need to include the whole website link, WordPress knows how to build it, like below:<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6350\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Category-slug.jpg\" alt=\"Category slug\" width=\"629\" height=\"140\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Parent category:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you want to create a sub-category.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Description<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (optional): a description of what the reader will find in that particular blog category.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The moment you hit \u201cAdd new category\u201d, you\u2019ll see the category to the right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to manage WordPress categories<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve just mentioned that there\u2019s a panel to the right, under Posts-&gt;Categories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6353\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/edit-a-WordPress-category.jpg\" alt=\"edit a WordPress category\" width=\"850\" height=\"268\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In here you can:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Delete a category<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>View a category<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; you will be directed to the web page of the category, with all the articles inside the category.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Edit all the details of the category<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>Quick edit<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; where you can update the name and slug of the category.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a \u201cQuick Edit\u201d option underneath every post as well. It looks like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6355\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Quick-Edit-at-the-post-level.jpg\" alt=\"Quick Edit at the post level\" width=\"629\" height=\"310\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is how you can rapidly assign another category to already existing posts, instead of entering every single post and making the edits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a great way of managing your categories, especially when you\u2019ve just redefined the whole structure of categories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to add WordPress categories to the blog sidebar?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wanna make your categories easier to discover by your readers? You can include them in your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/dos-and-donts-for-wordpress-sidebars\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">website\u2019s sidebar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: not all themes allow a sidebar. Proper site structure and navigation are delivering a good user experience, and Google takes this as a good signal in its ranking algorithm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing to bear in mind: avoid assigning more categories to a single post, it can hurt your website SEO-wise. You can assign multiple tags if you\u2019d like.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve seen that each category gets its own URL. Ideally, your categories should be keywords that your target audience is looking for. The slug for your category page should also focus on such keywords.
