Now, not everyone agrees on this definition: carousels are a type of slider that do not show entire large images at a time, but multiple ones in a row. Some web designers say the carousels and sliders are one and the same. When using WordPress, you will see them treated differently. both sliders and carousels make use of visual cues in order to show the user that they can move left-right and uncover new images, etc.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8410\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/carousel.jpg\" alt=\"carousel example\" width=\"1000\" height=\"331\" \/><\/li>\n<li>a gallery. <a href=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wordpress-galleries\/\">A gallery<\/a> is a collection of images or videos presented in grids.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8413 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/gallery.jpg\" alt=\"gallery example\" width=\"1098\" height=\"547\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, it\u2019s time for some design.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to make a portfolio in WordPress using the Default Editor<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As you might already know by now,\u00a0 the Default WordPress Editor works with blocks (the so-called Gutenberg blocks). You can have blocks for paragraphs, tables, custom HTML, and&#8230;galleries. At the moment we do not have options for sliders or carousels.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s add a gallery block to a page.<\/p>\n<p>We start by heading to the WordPress dashboard -&gt; Pages. You could either add a new page or edit an existing one.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8417\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/WordPress-pages.jpg\" alt=\"WordPress pages\" width=\"628\" height=\"234\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, from the &#8220;+&#8221; icon in the upper-left, open the blocks panel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8416\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/WordPress-blocks.jpg\" alt=\"WordPress blocks\" width=\"305\" height=\"780\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Select the gallery block.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8418\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/WordPress-gallery-block.jpg\" alt=\"WordPress gallery block\" width=\"620\" height=\"280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Drag the block to your desired place inside the page.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8421\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Edit-the-gallery.jpg\" alt=\"Edit the gallery\" width=\"1183\" height=\"496\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When you select the block, you will be able to see on the right a panel where you can add some additional CSS classes to this gallery block. Next, you could add styling to these classes using custom CSS. We&#8217;ve written an article on the topic <a href=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wordpress-custom-css\/\">here<\/a>. Now, you can add images to the gallery using the &#8220;Upload&#8221; or &#8220;Media Library&#8221; options&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Now, as you can see, there are no gallery customization options available. The block features are still a work in progress. If you need some extra enhancements, you could go for a WordPress gallery plugin that is Gutenberg-ready, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/envira-gallery-lite\/\">Envira<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/kadence-blocks\/\">Kadence<\/a>. Kadence also has options for carousels and sliders.<\/p>\n<p>Besides blocks, in the Editor, you&#8217;ll also find patterns. You can access them from the same &#8220;+&#8221; sign in the upper-left. Patterns are are predefined block layouts, available from the patterns tab of the block inserter. Once inserted into content, the blocks are ready for additional or modified content and configuration.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8423\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/WordPress-patterns.jpg\" alt=\"WordPress patterns\" width=\"326\" height=\"552\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The WordPress folks have just released a <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/patterns\/\">pattern directory<\/a> from where you could select some nice gallery layouts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8425 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/WordPress-patterns-collection.jpg\" alt=\"WordPress patterns collection\" width=\"1109\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In order to add them to your design, just hover over the pattern until you see the &#8220;Copy&#8221; button.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8426\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Copy-the-WordPress-gallery-pattern.jpg\" alt=\"Copy the WordPress gallery pattern\" width=\"373\" height=\"351\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, go to your page, and just right-click and paste the design.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8428\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Paste-the-WordPress-gallery-pattern.jpg\" alt=\"Paste the WordPress gallery pattern\" width=\"1000\" height=\"569\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the panel on the right, you can make some additional edits such as padding, opacity, overlay, minimum height, etc.<\/p>\n<p>If you select an image from the gallery, on top of it you&#8217;ll see a menu with some extra editing options. In here you can replace the image, crop it, add text on it, align it, etc.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8429\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Make-changes-to-the-images-in-the-gallery.jpg\" alt=\"Make changes to the images in the gallery\" width=\"892\" height=\"626\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And that was all for the Default Editor portfolio editing options.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to make a portfolio in WordPress using page builders<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the purpose of this exercise, we are using the multipurpose Colibri PRO WordPress theme and the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Colibri page builder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why am I using a WordPress website builder? Because it gives me drag and drop functionalities and the design experience is just piece of cake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the theme-builder combo I have these options for creating portfolios:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the gallery or portfolio blocks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the <a href=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wordpress-sliders\/\">sliders<\/a> and carousels components<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, as per the difference between blocks and components&#8230;The blocks are pre-defined designs that can be used as whole website sections (portfolio, features, the team). The components, on the other hand, are tinier items that can help in building new blocks (buttons, headings, videos, images, etc.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take them one by one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to design a WordPress portfolio using the portfolio or gallery blocks (not the same as Gutenberg blocks)<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With builders, everything is almost a click away. You just need to click on the \u201c+\u201d sign and open the blocks and components panel, and scroll down till you find the gallery or portfolio block.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The portfolio block can contain:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A header<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A description<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Images with or without description<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5980 \" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/WordPress-portfolio-block.jpg\" alt=\"WordPress portfolio block\" width=\"683\" height=\"594\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can insert your block by positioning yourself in the website place where you want the new section to be. Next, click on the block itself from the left-hand side panel. You can click on the desired block and press the \u201cdelete\u201d key on your keyboard if you want to place something else instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can always mix a portfolio block with some other components, such as text or video. Galleries are usually the choice when you want to list photos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5972 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Photogallery.jpg\" alt=\"WordPress photo gallery block\" width=\"336\" height=\"726\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter the choice, you can always customize your portfolio using the options from the left-hand side panel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 3 options: layout, style, and advanced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can change spacing, borders, shadows, typography, and colors, and even add your own CSS. Everything is easy and intuitive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5973 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/colibriwp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/portfolio-and-gallery-customization.jpg\" alt=\"portfolio and gallery customization\" width=\"264\" height=\"457\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to design a WordPress portfolio using the slider and carousel components<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As shown earlier, components can be found near the WordPress blocks. When you hit the \u201c+\u201d sign you\u2019ll open the blocks and components panel. From components, you can either type in \u201cslider\u201d or \u201ccarousel\u201d or just scroll until you find them. There\u2019s also an option for \u201cImage collage\u201d. If you can avoid plugins, do it. Lots of things require plugins in WordPress. The more plugins you have, the slower your website\u2019s loading time. So, choose wisely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I said, a page builder can give you options and functionalities that a lot of plugins offer, without having to worry about lots of updates and performance and security issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, first thing first.
